His comeback to the Test team had consisted of one innings, edged to slip for eight, before he made the trip to South Africa, where his job as opener suddenly changed to batting five. His first two days of the first Test in Durban were spent compiling his epic 190 to rescue Australia.

Then came his fourth day, hammering in the nails on a declaration by top scoring again with 82. Pulling out at 316 for six, Australia set South Africa 421 to win, then took four wickets for 102 by the close; Aiden Markram on 45 will be the main obstacle to an Australian series lead on the final day.

Winning is not enough for Manchester City to move on from this crisis

#Appeal #bell #Club #Erling Haaland #Football #Game #League #Manchester City #Match #Player #set

Jonathan Wilson | It’s not just that the club’s recent charges themselves are unprecedented – it’s the language used to describe them tooSign up for our free newsletter hereThe language of football is a fine and highly nuanced dialect. The majority of people involved in the game speak it with a high degree of sophistication.

Minor deviations from the familiar, almost imperceptible to outsiders, can set off alarm bells: what’s really going on there? Why isn’t he happy? What’s she hinting at? But it’s an argot developed to talk about football, and when applied to other subjects, it can sound extremely jarring.Erling Haaland is one of the brighter, more engaging players.

There’s an appealing quirkiness to him that suggests he has a higher-than-usual level of self-awareness. He doesn’t mind stepping outside the norms, being a bit different. But consider his assessment of Manchester City’s 3-0 win at Liverpool on Sunday. Continue reading...

Follow updates from the match at KingsmeadAny thoughts? Get in touch with an email10th over, Australia 71-1 (Maddinson 48, Labuschagne 5) The Maddo Express keeps rolling, loaded heavy with receipts. South Africa turn to spin, Maddinson puts one foot down the track and lofts Harmer down the ground for six.

This is a spectacle. Follows up with a couple more hits down the ground for two runs apiece. His score keeps rattling the loose shingle numbers on the board.9th over, Australia 59-1 (Maddinson 37, Labuschagne 4) Another edge, Labuschagne this time, getting lucky against Jansen, down through the cordon for three runs, hauled back just in time.

That brings Maddinson back on strike… and he immediately whacks another one! Again width, and he plays the same shot he kept trying in the first innings, except that this time he hits the ball. Top edgy, over the cordon, four. Continue reading...

Exeter finally find first win despite Christian Wade’s hat-trick for Newcastle

Prem Rugby: Exeter 34-28 NewcastleWade becomes second player to score 100 top-tier triesAmid the current gushing torrent of Prem tries here was a reminder that winning still trumps all else. Exeter finally have their first, relieving, victory of the campaign but there were times when it seemed Newcastle might conceivably secure a first away league success in almost four years.

In the event the Red Bulls fell just short despite Christian Wade running in a hat-trick to become only the second player to score 100 top-tier tries.Exeter will be suitably relieved to have edged a curate’s egg of a contest, ultimately made safe by a late try from their Georgian prop Bachuki Tchumbadze.

The Chiefs’ Italian international back-rower Ross Vintcent also contributed two first-quarter tries to steal some of the prolific Wade’s thunder. The 35-year-old retains a poacher’s instinct and is now closing in fast – in every sense – on Chris Ashton’s all-time Prem career haul of 101. Continue reading...
