GNI per capita 'almost certain' to reach $40,000 in 2026: finance ministry

Korea is "almost certain" to reach a gross national income (GNI) per capita of $40,000 this year, the finance ministry said Tuesday, as Asia's No. 4 economy grew 1 percent in the third quarter from the previous three-month period, driven by strong exports and investment.

The Ministry of Finance and Economy made the assessment following the release of advance third-quarter data from the Bank of Korea (BOK), which would mark a new milestone after the country's per capita GNI, a gauge of the population's purchasing power, first surpassed the $30,000 mark in 2014. "Korea maintained solid growth despite a high base effect from the first half, raising the possibility of growth in the mid-3 percent range this year," the finance ministry said.

Finance Minister Lee Hyoung-il said this month Korea's economic growth for 2026 could range from 3.4 percent to 3.6 percent. "The GNI per capita is almost certain to hit $40,000 for the first time ever," it added. The International Monetary Fund also recently projected Korea's per capita GNI would reach the $40,000 level in 2026 and $50,000 in 2028. The fina

Trump allies fall in two elections as Netanyahu faces next test

#Analyst #Brazil #Chile #Colombia #economy #Europe #France #Germany #Honduras #Hungary #Iran #Israel #Killed #Li #loss #Marine Le Pen #Power #R #Serbia #SET #tariff #tariffs #Trump

A pair of Trump-friendly right-wing populists took a one-two punch Sunday: Brazil rejected a Bolsonaro comeback, and Serbia toppled a strongman's ruling party. The big picture: Brazil denied Trump a close ally at the helm of Latin America's largest economy, snapping a streak of seven straight conservative wins in the region.

In Europe, Serbia and Hungary toppled leaders with close Trump ties who had dominated their countries for years. Now, another massively pivotal election looms Tuesday, when Trump ally, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, will face a battle for political survival. On the eve of the election, Netanyahi touted Trump's endorsement and his "friendship" with the American president.

But as the global right has made gains, opposition forces proved this weekend that they still have fuel.Driving the news: In Brazil, leftist President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva staved off a challenge from Flávio Bolsonaro, the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro. The younger Bolsonaro, widely seen as the heir to his father's populist movement, refused to concede and called for the results to be annulled, according to translations. The elder Bolsonaro is serving a 27-year sentence after being convicted of plotting a coup to overturn his 2022 loss.

Trump has called the prosecution a "WITCH HUNT."The White House did not immediately respond to Axios' request for comment on the race.Between the lines: Brazil's election emerged as a test of Trump's political influence in Latin America, where right-wing and Trump-backed candidates have celebrated an uninterrupted series of wins. Those victories include Trump-endorsed Abelardo de la Espriella in Colombia, Nasry "Tito" Asfura in Honduras and José Antonio Kast in Chile.Trump did not formally endorse Flávio Bolsonaro, but he met with him earlier this year and imposed ignificant tariffs on Brazil as he protested the charges against Bolsonaro's father.

Lula is a vocal Trump critic. In March, Flávio Bolsonaro told an audience at the Conservative Political Action Conference that America faced a "fork in the road" in the election: "Either you have the most powerful ally in the hemisphere, or an antagonist."Zoom out: Meanwhile, across the Atlantic, a student-led opposition movement toppled the right-wing party of long-serving strongman Aleksandar Vučić, who was seeking to become prime minister.Unlike the Bolsonaros, Vučić conceded defeat Sunday. The Balkan leader had courted Trump's inner circle, including Donald Trump Jr., and described the president as a "kindred spirit."It reflects the shifting tides that also allowed next-door Hungary to oust Trump-allied Viktor Orbán, once one of the Western world's most entrenched populist leaders, in April after 16 years in power.

Yes, but: Europe's political upheaval is cutting both ways: While the populist right has fallen in Serbia and Hungary, it's gaining ground in two of the continent's largest economies. In France, far-right presidential frontrunner Marine Le Pen launched her 2027 campaign this weekend, seizing on nationwide unrest to pitch her tough-on-crime, anti-migrant agenda.

In Germany, the far-right Alternative for Germany won a record 44% in a state election last month and continues to lead in national polls. What we're watching: Trump's historic move of endorsing Netanyahu in Tuesday's Israeli elections will once again test his influence abroad.Tuesday's election in Israel is set to be tight for Netanyahu, who has sought to elevate Trump's endorsement as he jockeys with former Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot. The 77-year-old Netanyahu has been prime minister for some 19 years in nonconsecutive terms.

Analysts see the election as a referendum on the security failure of Oct. 7, 2023, that killed around 1,200 people.Whoever governs Israel could shape Trump's next moves in the Middle East — including whether to escalate the war in Iran.Go deeper: Lula v. Elections in Israel: Can Netanyahu Hold on to Power?

#division #Hold #Inflation #Israel #media #Moderate #Power #Regional

Israel’s upcoming parliamentary election pits Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-wing religious bloc against a more moderate opposition led by Gadi Eisenkot. Key issues include security, accountability for the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack, Haredi military conscription and inflation. European media warn that Netanyahu’s legacy, regional conflicts and divisive campaign rhetoric could deepen Israel’s political and social divisions, despite potential gains from government change.

As US and China form AI blocs, countries are increasingly torn between them

#affordable #AI #China #Chips #cooperation #GAP #Initiative #Kazakhstan #Power #Supply Chain #supply chains #United States

HONG KONG — With the two leading AI powers, the United States and China, forming their own AI blocs, other countries are maneuvering to harness the strengths of both groupings and avoid losing out. As the rivalry intensifies, experts say the window for countries to be able to choose freely between the two AI superpowers may be narrowing, forcing them to at one point pick between the U.S.-led Pax Silica and the China-inspired World AI Cooperation Organization.

That could put many countries in a dilemma: Do they go with the U.S.’s most advanced chips and AI technologies, or join China’s more affordable, open-source AI systems? Kazakhstan, a Central Asian nation of about 21 million people, is a rare example of a country that has sought to bridge that gap.

Just three weeks after its AI minister Zhaslan Madiyev visited Washington in June to join the U.S. group working to strengthen AI supply chains, he headed to Shanghai for a signing ceremony making the Central Asian country a founding member of China's initiative to shape the global AI agenda.

President Lee Jae Myung's approval rating fell to 35.3 percent after rebounding the previous week, a poll showed Monday. In the poll conducted on 2,517 adults nationwide from last Monday to Friday by Realmeter, positive assessments of Lee's job performance fell 2 percentage points from the previous week.

Lee's disapproval rating stood at 62.3 percent, up 1.9 percentage points from the previous week. Realmeter attributed the decline to growing concerns over the housing market and the economy, including the recent stock market plunge. The pollster also cited North Korea's threat to resume loudspeaker broadcasts toward the South and controversy over whether the chief of the Serious Crime Investigation Agency should attend Cabinet meetings.

In a separate survey of 1,003 adults conducted between Thursday and Friday, support for the ruling Democratic Party of Korea fell 0.2 percentage point to 36 percent, while that of the main opposition People Power Party rose 1.7 percentage points to 42.6 percent. The survey on the president had a margin of error of 2 percentage points at a 95 percent confide

Venezuelan opposition leader returns after 10 months in exile

After more than 10 months in exile, Venezuelan opposition leader and Nobel laureate returned home to a political landscape that has been reshaped by her ally the United States without her involvement.

- Maria Corina Machado Press Team Sigue nuestra cobertura en español After more than 10 months in exile, Venezuelan opposition leader and Nobel laureate María Corina Machado has returned home to a political landscape that has been reshaped by her ally the United States without her involvement.

“I am here. With you,” Machado announced on X Sunday morning shortly before other members of the opposition confirmed her arrival without providing details. Former opposition presidential candidate Edmundo González Urrutia, who is currently in exile, celebrated her return, saying, “Today is a very important day for Venezuelans.

Our sovereign voice returns with her to lead and guide this process!” He added that he will soon join her in returning to the country. The opposition shared images of Machado on Sunday in Lara state being greeted by supporters at the Church of Santa Rosa.

US President Donald Trump said he didn’t know about her return but that he hoped she was safe. “I don’t know anything about it, but I think she’s a very nice woman,” Trump said when CNN’s Julia Benbrook asked about Machado’s whereabouts. “She gave me her Nobel Prize, so how can I say anything else? And I hope she’s safe.”

Machado left Venezuela in December for Norway to accept the Nobel Peace Prize, which she was awarded for promoting democratic rights in her country. unknown content item - A month after she left, the US toppled her rival, strongman President Nicolás Maduro, and began working with the acting Venezuelan government to steer the country toward a democratic transition and political reconciliation.

The process has involved several high-profile opposition figures but has excluded Machado and González Urrutia. Dinorah Figuera, who has been leading the opposition bloc’s negotiations with the government, said Machado’s return was a result of Maduro’s ouster and the ongoing reconciliation talks. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio echoed those remarks and added: “The United States expects the freedoms of all sectors of Venezuelan politics to continue to be respected.

Likewise, we expect all political actors to support these talks which represent the best chance Venezuela has had in thirty years to peacefully achieve not just a free and fair election but an enduring democracy.” Machado had repeatedly vowed to return home and hinted that she would run for president again if an election were held.

In late August, a key member of her inner circle, Omar González, returned to the country after almost three years in exile, in what he called a “prelude” to Machado’s own arrival. Machado had attempted to re-enter Venezuela seven times over the past few months without success, according to her advisers.

She first tried in late June to help with reconstruction efforts after two powerful earthquakes devastated the country, but claimed the government thwarted her return by closing its airspace. She tried again in late September while acting Venezuelan President Delcy Rodríguez was in New York for the United Nations General Assembly, but she was denied entry three times in a single day.

Rubio said on September 1 that Washington had concerns about her possible return but that she did not need the United States’ approval. “María Corina Machado, a Venezuelan citizen, has every right to enter her country whenever she wants to return. We have given her advice.

For example, during the earthquake, we had many concerns and will continue to have concerns in the future, but we want her safety to be guaranteed,” he said at the time. While away from home for more than 10 months, Machado traveled the world to rally political support from her allies, including Trump, to whom she gifted her Nobel Prize.

Machado arrives at the US Capitol to meet senators after her meeting with Trump on January 15, 2026. - Elizabeth Frantz/Reuters While the Trump administration has shown support for Machado in the past, it has largely sidelined her from Venezuela’s ongoing political transition. After ousting Maduro in January, Trump called Machado a “very nice woman,” but claimed she “does not have the support or the respect within the country” to be leader.

Instead, the US has been working with Maduro’s successor, Delcy Rodríguez, to enact political and economic reforms in the country. Rodríguez has met just about every demand from the Trump administration, including releasing hundreds of political prisoners and making it easier for US companies to invest in the country.

In late August, Trump announced that the US had reached an agreement to take majority control of more than 65 billion barrels of proven oil reserves in Venezuela, a move some consider beneficial for both the US oil industry and the Venezuelan economy. Machado in a video statement questioned why the oil agreement announced by Trump was being signed by the Venezuelan government, which she called an “illegitimate regime.”

The government clung to power in 2024 after state-controlled electoral authorities declared Maduro the winner of the last presidential election, despite experts concluding that such a result was statistically improbable. Rodríguez vowed at the UN General Assembly last month that Venezuela would hold new elections and transition to a full democracy, which the US says is the main goal, but the acting government has yet to announce when a vote will take place.

Trump has repeatedly said the country is not ready for elections yet but has insisted that a lot of progress has been made. CNN’s Logan Schiciano and Julia Benbrook contributed to this report.
