#BET #Chips #competitiveness #growth #Hold #investment #profit #semiconductor #SET #Yong

Samsung Electronics Executive Chairman Lee Jae-yong on Tuesday marked his 4th anniversary at the helm of Korea’s largest conglomerate. With Samsung Electronics set to become one of the world’s most profitable companies with over 100 trillion won in operating profit in the third quarter, Lee’s efforts to restore the company’s competitiveness in semiconductor and foster future growth businesses are becoming increasingly evident.

According to Samsung Electronics, the company will not hold an official ceremony to celebrate the anniversary, and Lee will also not issue a separate statement. Lee was promoted from vice chairman to executive chairman on Oct. 27, 2022, but both before and after his promotion, he has generally refrained from making public statements about the company at formal events, focusing instead on visiting business sites and meeting employees.

When Lee has spoken publicly, it has generally been at times when the company faced a crisis. Upon taking on the chairmanship, he wrote a message calling for investments in technologies that did not yet exist. In March last ye

GNI per capita 'almost certain' to reach $40,000 in 2026: finance ministry

Korea is "almost certain" to reach a gross national income (GNI) per capita of $40,000 this year, the finance ministry said Tuesday, as Asia's No. 4 economy grew 1 percent in the third quarter from the previous three-month period, driven by strong exports and investment.

The Ministry of Finance and Economy made the assessment following the release of advance third-quarter data from the Bank of Korea (BOK), which would mark a new milestone after the country's per capita GNI, a gauge of the population's purchasing power, first surpassed the $30,000 mark in 2014. "Korea maintained solid growth despite a high base effect from the first half, raising the possibility of growth in the mid-3 percent range this year," the finance ministry said.

Finance Minister Lee Hyoung-il said this month Korea's economic growth for 2026 could range from 3.4 percent to 3.6 percent. "The GNI per capita is almost certain to hit $40,000 for the first time ever," it added. The International Monetary Fund also recently projected Korea's per capita GNI would reach the $40,000 level in 2026 and $50,000 in 2028. The fina

Korea's economy grows 1% in Q3 on chip exports, beating forecasts

#Bank #Boom #central bank #crude #crude oil #economy #Export #Forecast #GDP #Gross Domestic Product #growth #Import #investment #manufacturing #oil #property #quarterly #real #recovery #semiconductor #Semiconductors

Korea's economy expanded 1 percent in the third quarter from the previous quarter, extending its stronger-than-expected recovery on the back of booming semiconductor exports, the Bank of Korea (BOK) said Tuesday. Preliminary data from the central bank showed that real gross domestic product (GDP) rose 1 percent in the July-September period, exceeding the BOK's own projection of 0.3 percent for the quarter.

Facilities investment rose 4.1 percent, mainly on increased investment in machinery, including semiconductor manufacturing equipment. Investment in intellectual property products grew 2.3 percent as spending on research and development and software increased. Exports grew 2.3 percent, driven mainly by semiconductors and machinery and electrical equipment.

Imports rose 2.4 percent, led by increases in crude oil and semiconductor manufacturing equipment. The stronger-than-expected growth puts the economy on a firmer footing to meet the BOK's growth forecast of 3.3 percent for this year, released in August. The country's quarterly growth rebounded sharply from a 0.1 percent contraction in

Economic policy vets see risks in AI overreliance

#AI #Bank #budget #China #CPI #Don #Fed #Federal Reserve #GDP #investment #jobs #Li #market #oil #R #real #Return #Taxes #trade #Trump

Harvard economist Jason Furman told Axios that if he were to return to his old job as chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers today, he would rely on AI tools over staff economists for much of the council's day-to-day analytical work. The big picture: Unsurprisingly, this made some waves in the online discourse, particularly the loose-knit community formerly known as Econ Twitter. Many veterans of the economic policy trenches see real risks in future policymakers becoming overly reliant on AI — or at a minimum think that Furman is underestimating the importance of human economists in advising the nation's leaders. What they're saying: "CEA work, at least in my experience, is highly bespoke as you're explaining the data flow (and much else) to very busy people who don't want only market-shop analysis," Jared Bernstein, the CEA chair under President Biden, wrote on Substack."Yes, they want and need that — what will the markets make of this CPI, jobs, GDP, etc. report — but more so they want to know how this report fits into our narrative, our agenda, the president's trip today to Iowa."He adds that within a White House, "the human skill of reading-the-room is paramount.

I'm far from an AI expert, but my sense is it sucks at that and probably always will, a conclusion that derives in no small part from listening to its creators!"Zoom in: Claudia Sahm, a former Federal Reserve economist, raised an issue that we've often heard from senior people in fields like consulting and investment banking: If you get rid of junior positions, where will future senior leaders come from?Furman's staff "went on to found the Yale Budget Lab, run Treasury economic policy and a Fed institute, serve in later [administrations], and publish research on trade, environment, and taxes.

That's what '20 staff' become," she wrote on X. "No model does that."Bloomberg chief U.S. economist Anna Wong argues that the "ability to now not depend on anyone, as a senior person, is very, very empowering. Now, with just the idea, a senior person can go far."Zoom out: "Entering into sci fi speculation," Wong wrote on X, "as humans [we're] not about to replace the aging experts due to low pipeline of young human experts, AI themselves, through the training over the years, became the one spawning the ideas.""That seems like a disaster waiting to happen that current social policy needs to address."Yes, but: Casey Mulligan, who served in President Trump's first-term CEA and now as chief economist at the Department of Health and Human Services, said that the implications of AI for human labor in policymaking are not so obvious."I built AI tools at two federal offices," Mulligan wrote on X. "Able to do economic research better and more quickly, we needed more economists rather than fewer due to the added demand for what we do.

This pattern is also evident in the small business sector."This concept — that labor-saving tools can actually increase demand for labor — is known as Jevons Paradox. The bottom line: "Be the labor-augmenting technological change you want to see in the world," wrote Stanford economist Neale Mahoney."It's on us olders to build organizations where people and AI complement each other, and to prepare the youngers for a world with better and better AI," he adds.

Meta says share sale will support its “continued investment in AI infrastructure and personal superintelligence”, as Elon Musk warns some AI cloud computing firms face ‘guppy-level death’UK government borrowing costs are dropping this morning, a welcome sign ahead of Wednesday’s budget. The yield (or interest rate) on 10 and 30-year UK gilts have both dropped by around three basis points (0.03 of a percentage point) this morning.Issuing loans to public financial institutions creates a financial asset that offsets the increase in outstanding government debt.

If the investments that the PuFins make generate sufficient returns for the PuFins to repay their government loans, then long term debt sustainability is little affected.Limited transparency and the risk that the PuFins may suffer impairments on their investments will probably make bond market investors skeptical of the extra gilt issuance.

Chancellor Healey should avoid a big increase in gilt issuance to fund such intra-public sector lending.Nebius, CoreWeave and Iren were slammed in premarket trading on Monday after SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk said more than 200 neoclouds are “going to see guppy-level death and consolidation.”That’s the guppy fish – prone to suddenly dying in household fisk tanks – not the GBPJPY FX cross...In a post on X Musk said “debt markets have almost entirely shut off access to money for any company that doesn’t have substantial revenue independent of AI data centers”.

U.S. asset managers are pulling back from leveraged exchange-traded funds (ETFs) tied to Korean companies, liquidating existing products and scrapping planned launches as a local stock market downturn dampens investor appetite, industry officials said Monday. Tradr ETFs, a brand of U.S. asset manager AXS Investments, decided on Oct.

20 to delist two funds offering leveraged long and short exposure to SK hynix's Nasdaq-listed American depositary receipts (ADR), according to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. The funds, Tradr 2X Long SK hynix and Tradr 2X Short SK hynix, will cease trading on Nov.

5, with liquidation and cash distributions based on their net asset values expected on or around Nov. 12. The closures come just three months after the funds were launched. Industry officials said the move may reflect limited prospects for gaining market share and difficulties attracting anticipated trading volumes and assets under management.

The two funds had combined net assets of just over $2 million as of Friday. Competition has also intensified as multiple asset mana

Korean stocks opened lower Monday as investors awaited third-quarter earnings from major chipmakers and the U.S. Federal Reserve's monetary policy decision later this week amid rising oil prices. After opening 0.92 percent lower, the benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) pared its earlier losses to trade down 24.45 points, or 0.46 percent, to 5,524.85 as of 9:15 a.m.

The index gained 0.3 percent Friday but lost 2.08 percent for the week amid heavy foreign selling and volatility in semiconductor shares. Investors are awaiting earnings reports from SK hynix on Wednesday and Samsung Electronics on Thursday for clues about the outlook for artificial intelligence (AI) chip demand and memory prices.

Investors are also keeping a close eye on the Federal Reserve's two-day policy meeting starting Tuesday (U.S. time), with the central bank widely expected to keep interest rates unchanged amid persistent inflationary pressures. Wall Street closed lower Friday as rising oil prices and lingering concerns over returns on massive AI investments weighed on sentiment.

Korea-US investment firm gets credit ratings with stable outlooks

#credit #investment #Support #United States

Global credit rating agencies have assigned ratings in line with Korea's sovereign ratings to the state-run company tasked with implementing Seoul's $350 billion investment pledge to the United States, the firm said Monday. The Korea-U.S. Strategic Investment Corporation (KUIC) said Moody's Ratings assigned it an Aa2 issuer rating with a stable outlook, while S&P Global Ratings assigned it long-term credit ratings of AA.

These were the company's first credit ratings since its launch earlier this year. "KUIC's rating is driven by the Government of Korea's very high willingness and ability to provide timely support, given the strong credit linkages between KUIC and the Government of Korea," Moody's Ratings said in a release.

"The government's strong ability to support KUIC is underpinned by the sovereign's ample financial reserves and strong creditworthiness, as reflected in its Aa2 rating," it added. S&P Global Ratings noted its assessment of KUIC reflects its view that "the institution has an almost certain likelihood of receiving timely and sufficient support from the Korean government i

Hungary can learn from Korea's state-led economic growth model, expert says

#debt #economic growth #FDI #foreign direct investment #growth #Hungary #investment #Supply Chain #supply chains #Support

Korea's state-led economic development model offers important lessons for Hungary, which has relied heavily on foreign direct investment (FDI) to drive economic growth, according to a Hungarian expert. Zoltan Pogatsa, a professor at the University of Sopron in Hungary, made the remarks during a seminar titled "Hungary's Economic Strategy: Lessons from Korea's Development Experience," held at Sookmyung Women's University in Seoul, Oct.

22. Pogatsa highlighted the contrasting economic development paths of the two countries, noting that Hungary has relied heavily on FDI since gaining autonomy over its economic policies following the end of Soviet domination, while Korea pursued a state-led development model, taking on substantial debt to subsidize domestic firms.

With FDI development strategy, Pogatsa argued that Hungary has limited its ability to develop globally competitive domestic brands and control its own supply chains, while Korea's strong government intervention to support domestic companies helped the country establish globally recognized brands such as Samsung and Hyundai. Korea's Q2 current account surplus tops Germany, Japan combined on chip boom

#AI #artificial intelligence #Bank #Boom #China #current account #current account surplus #dividend #Export #Fund #Germany #IMF #investment #Japan #manufacturing #semiconductor #trade #trade surplus

Korea’s current account surplus exceeded the combined total of manufacturing powerhouses Germany and Japan in the second quarter of this year for the first time since comparable data for all three countries became available in 1996, data showed Sunday. Booming semiconductor exports have pushed the trade surplus to record highs, while expanding overseas investments have boosted dividend and interest income.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) expects Korea's current account surplus to rank second globally behind China this year, with the largest increase among 190 countries. However, experts warned that a global slowdown in artificial intelligence (AI) investment or increased supply from rival chip exporters could threaten the gains, highlighting the need to diversify the country's industrial base.

According to IMF data compiled by the Bank of Korea (BOK), Korea posted a current account surplus of $116.6 billion in the second quarter, ranking second behind China among 36 major economies for which data was available. Germany ranked third with $52.3 billion, followed by Japan with $50.6

Trump announces $4 billion Audi factory in Georgia ahead of midterms

#Canada #China #construction #economy #employment #Euro #Europe #Export #Georgia #Germany #Gold #Import #investment #Japan #jobs #Long-Term Investment #manufacturing #market #Mexico #plant #Regulation #SET #tariff #tariffs #trade #Trump #United States #USMCA

By Bo Erickson and David Shepardson PERRY, Georgia, Oct 24 (Reuters) - US President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that Audi plans to build a $4 billion assembly plant in Georgia that will produce 200,000 SUVs annually, as he seeks to convince ‌Americans to back Republicans in the November 3 midterm elections.

Trump, who has pressured automakers to move production to the United States ‌and has raised tariffs on autos, steel, aluminum and parts, made the announcement at a rally in Perry, near Macon in central Georgia, where Volkswagen's premium subsidiary intends to build its first US assembly plant.

Last year, Trump's tariffs dealt Audi a €1.2-billion-euro ($1.4-billion) blow as it imports all its vehicles for the US market from Europe or Mexico. Georgia has competitive election races for US Senate and governor. Trump is eager to make the case that his auto tariffs are helping the US economy.

Critics say they have boosted vehicle prices and that the trade uncertainty has delayed some automaker investments. "We are planning to bring ‌our biggest and most premium SUVs, and produce them here in Macon, Georgia," Audi CEO Gernot Doellner said at the event. "This is a this is a long-term investment because we believe in the American market."

REPUBLICAN SAYS TARIFFS BROUGHT AUDI PLANT TO UNITED STATES Audi said the investment will create approximately 4,500 jobs. Construction is scheduled to begin next year, with production starting in the early 2030s, Audi said. The plant is expected to assemble the Audi Q7, Q8 and Q9 SUVs, a US official told Reuters.

Audi also plans to build 25,000 vehicles a year in neighboring South Carolina, the official said. Some of the vehicles, now built in Europe, would be exported, the official added. Those vehicles will be assembled at ‌a $2 billion plant of VW's off-road brand Scout Motors that is under construction in Blythewood, near the state capital, Columbia, the official said.

Trump has cut government incentives for electric vehicles, causing a significant reduction in US EV and battery production. US vehicle and parts employment has fallen since Trump took office last year. A gold Audi with manufacturer license plates was parked outside Trump's rally. US Senator Bernie Moreno, an Ohio Republican, said late on Saturday that "with this investment, Audi will build all of their SUVs exclusively in the US."

He said the Audi plant "would never have ‌happened without tariffs, without common sense regulations and without eliminating California’s ability to regulate fuel economy standards." Audi sales have fallen for two consecutive years and slid 7% in the first half of 2026 as fierce competition in China and US tariffs hit demand.

Audi's US sales are down 16% this year. Audi's Neckarsulm plant in southwest Germany ‌is one of four German Volkswagen plants facing possible closure after 2030. In July, Japan's Toyota said it would spend $3.6 billion to build a 2.5-million-square-foot (232,000-square-metre) truck assembly line on its San Antonio, Texas, manufacturing campus and shift some truck production to the US from Mexico.

The Japanese automaker said the expansion would be completed by 2030, creating 2,000 jobs. Honda Motor is considering building a US assembly plant but has ‌warned it may not unless the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement on trade is extended. South Korea's Hyundai said last year that if it had certainty about USMCA, it "would immediately unlock over $20 billion in new American investments."
